For Hermann Memorial, patient and staff safety is of utmost importance. To improve their security measures, this group of 12 hospitals chose Veristream's VeriHealth vendor management system.

"We were in the process of updating our vendor registration requirements and we realized that we needed to tighten our vendor policies in an effort to increase patient safety and product formulary compliance," says Stephanie Rogers, Director Materials Management. "We were looking for a system that would allow us to move away from the hand-written sticker vendor badges to a true vendor credentialing system which could be linked to a vendor badge system at the facilities. We wanted to approve any vendor representatives that entered our facilities and always know who, when, where, and why a vendor was present.“

"We manage about 1000 visitors a day across the 14 hospitals," adds Mackenzie Garcia, Project Manager. "We needed something that would carry that weight.“

Rogers further explains, "The healthcare setting is dependent on third party vendors for different aspects of patient care. This requires a healthcare institution to allow medical vendors access to their buildings and their patients. By implementing our vendor credentialing process and using the VeriHealth software and badge system, we are able to manage credentialing and screening these vendor representatives before granting them access to our facilities, our staff, and our patients. As a result, our hospital staff knows that vendor representatives should be wearing one of the iVisitor vendor badges, and if not, they should start asking questions.“

Staff acceptance is key to implementing a visitor management system, as staff is generally the first line of defense against unwanted guests. According to Garcia, "The employees voted on the system that provided the most comprehensive detail," and now that VeriHealth is in place, "they like it; they think the idea behind it is really good."

“The hospital staff has a renewed awareness of vendor activity in the facility and has welcomed the new system and badges," continues Rogers. "The staff feels empowered to ask questions and insist vendors comply with our policy. Our facilities are evaluated monthly on their ability to meet our policy standards."  Vendors have accepted the new system as well. "Overall, most vendors have been understanding of the policy and our need to ensure the safety of our patients and hospital staff.

Currently, Memorial Herman has the VeriHealth system installed in 8 facilities with plans to expand to other facilities in the near future. VeriHealth has made it possible for the Memorial Hermann Hospital System to achieve its security goals. “VeriHealth is a very flexible system and has allowed us to customize the software package to fit the needs of a healthcare system," says Rogers.

The service and support have been excellent.  The iVisitor product works perfectly for our needs.  We have been able to utilize a very robust and specialized piece of software, but have not been required to make a large capital purchase to benefit from this application.  I would recommend this product as well as the folks who sell and support it to anyone with a need to use iVisitor.  Great job!!  Thank you for being there for us.
